Another skull found in Annigeri

Last Updated 17 June 2012, 18:54 IST

One more skull was found on Sunday at Annigeri where 601 skulls were found while desilting drains in August 2010.

The skull was found this time on the Veerabhadreshwara temple premises, while digging the earth for erecting a lamp post as part of renovation work.

Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain told Deccan Herald that the officials of the Archaeological Survey of India would examine the newly found skull.

There were various theories about the skulls unearthed last year.
While some said it could have been a cemetery, others  said the skulls were of soldiers  who died in a battle.

Another theory, put forth by historian M M Kalburgi, was that the skulls were those of devotees belonging to a Shaiva sect, who died in a religious sacrifice.
