120-year-old school faces threat of closure

The Sasihithlu Government Primary School is sandwitched between Arabian sea on one hand and Nandini river on the other. The school situated amidst greenary is more than 120 years old. Owing to the shortage of students, the school is on the verge of closure.

When compared to private schools, this school is no inferior in any way. The old students of the school have provided all the facilities to the school. It has a building, Rangamandira, computer lab and library and school ground. The students are taught English from first standard itself. Though the number of facilities increased, not the children. The strength of the school did not cross 30 for the last several years.

There is only one child at Anganwadi centre in the school premises this year. Though the number of students in fifth to seventh standard has crossed two digit numbers, from first to fourth standard, there are handful of students.

The school was started by Vasudeva Shanboghue in the year 1888. It was started at Sasihithlu Bhagavathi temple premises. The old students association came into existence in 1956. The school got a fulfledged building with the help of donors in the year 1968.

The Old Student Association of the School has appointed three teachers and are paying their salaries. The school is also offering free tuition to the children along with free medical camp and distribution of free uniforms.
