CSIR - India scientist and director of research, Innovation and Development at JSS MVP V Prakash opined that there is a need to preserve knowledge and understand the importance of patents which Westerners have recognised.

He was speaking after inaugurating a one-day state-level workshop on ‘technology and intellectual property rights,’ at department of studies and research in law of Karnataka State Open University here on Sunday.

Many researches and innovations are continously being done in India, for which regretfully, researchers do not try to get patent. “Knowledge is precious and should be systematically conserved and should be looked on and see that it is used for better purpose.”

Other countries publish the researches on internet as soon as the research is completed, while Indians limit the knowledge and lack the habit of digitalising it.

He opined that obtaining patents is not an easy task and lakhs of subjects are available to get patents. He said if one takes initiative of implementing a scheme, it would be continued by others.

He called upon students to understand the depth of subjects and know who has registered first for research and who has conducted it first.

KSOU vice-chancellor K S Rangappa, dean (academic) S N Vikram Raje Urs, dean (study centre) T D Devegowda and head of studies and research in law department C N Manjappa were present.
