Educationists concerned over 'discrimination'

The alleged act of “discrimination” by a private school has raised serious concerns over the implementation of the Right To Education (RTE) Act.

Educationists are now raising alarm and fear that such acts of discrimination may result in dividing the sections of society. It is feared that such act will increase the inferiority complex among children. According to Prof Thimmappa, former vice chancellor of Bangalore University, the acts cast deleterious effect on the young minds. “Even worse, such acts, if proved, will have a bearing on the parents of these less affluent children admitted under RTE quota,” he said. Echoing similar thoughts, Dr Dwarkanath, another educationist, said even 60 years after getting independence the country still had not given equal rights to the downtrodden.

“Such heinous acts cannot be tolerated. More than the children, psychologically, parents will be facing the brunt of the acts by the private school,” he said.

He said that, if the ‘inactive’ government fails to arrest the situation it will blow up into a law and order crisis. “The government needs to step in. If it do not, the State will be in a precarious position,” he said.

Thimmappa, in his observation, believed that the RTE was introduced without proper ‘preparation’. “The State was ill-prepared to implement the Act. It will create havoc as no one has understood the spirit of RTE,” he said. As a solution, it has been mooted by Thimmappa that the government needs to sit with the private managements and conduct workshops for ensuring that the spirit and letter of the RTE is understood.
All India Save Education Committee, Secretary K Uma said the State must moot for a meeting with the private managements to ensure that there is no ‘misunderstandings’. “Acts cannot be introduced by force. They need to be comprehensively discussed and then introduced,” she added.
