No one knows how to celebrate like the students of Symbiosis Institute of Business Management — amply illustrated during ‘Jazz 2012’, a cultural programme organised by the college’s extracurricular activity club.

The programme included several mini-events, each giving interested students a chance to prove themselves — these included ‘Symbi Idol’, which predictably followed the format of popular American reality show ‘American Idol’; ‘Razzmatazz’, a group-dance competition; ‘Five-A-Side’, a football tournament that was a dream come true for the college’s jocks; ‘Protagonist’, a short-film competition; ‘Hoop Brawlers’, which was a basketball showdown and ‘En Vogue’ the much-awaited fashion
extravaganza.

The students of the college were incredibly geared up for the competition, and it was clear that many of them had been practising for D-day weeks beforehand.
The fest was spread out over two days — on the first day, ‘Symbi Idol’ and ‘Razzmatazz’ were held in the college auditorium while the football tournament was conducted outside.

The events were prefaced by a wonderfully brief inauguration programme, wherein the dean of the college – even played a short tune on the harmonica, to the students’ delight.

A few students from the college came forward to add a touch of colour to the ceremony. Among others, Sanchit and Shubham — on the violin and guitar respectively — played a few old Hindi songs, such as Bombay Meri Jaan, Mohabbatein and Ek Haseena Thi.
The stage was then quickly cleared of mics, chairs and instruments, so the participants of ‘Symbi Idol’ could come on.

First up was Kanaka, who was accompanied by Tejas on the guitar. She sang a melancholy number from the movie Ra.One.

The clarity of her voice and perfectly-controlled modulation deeply impressed the audience.

Following her, Sparsh took the stage — once more, accompanied by Tejas. He sang Chehra Hai Ya Chand, amid much hooting from those who had gathered at the auditorium.

The next hopeful for the much-coveted prize was Iqbal, from IFIM. He selected a song from Om Shanti Om, called Main Agar Kahoon, and sang it against a karaoke track.

Abhijeet — also from IFIM — followed this up with a rather enthusiastic rendition of Nadaan Parindey, from the movie ‘Rockstar’. Music director Abhilash Lakr judged the event and selected Jashita Ray, from SIMC, as the winner.

‘Razzmatazz’ transpired to be one of the glitziest events in the fest, with an array of colourful and energy-infused dances — including traditional ones as well as those with a contemporary edge.

The students had clearly rehearsed frantically for
the event, and the coordination to their motion was
perfect.

The event was judged by odissi dancer Vandana Supriya and artistic director Satya V J and not surprisingly, the Lethal Bhangra team from SIMB emerged victorious.

One of the most awaited parts of the fest was ‘En Vogue’. Filled with all the glamour associated with a fashion show, the event was a treat to the eye — the student surpassed themselves when it came to the ‘chic’ factor and there were very few faux pas on the ramp.

The home team walked away with the prize for their avant garde attire and swanky accessories.
