Corporators for clearing dry waste on alternate days

Last Updated 10 October 2012, 19:51 IST

The submission by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner Rajneesh Goel before the High Court on Tuesday that segregated dry waste would be lifted twice a week from households has brought some relief to disgruntled corporators.

In the wake of the submission, the corporators have now demanded that the BBMP lift dry waste once in two days.

Floor leader N Nagaraju said the City would reek if the dry waste was not cleared daily.
Basavanagudi corporator B S Satyanarayana blamed the Palike Commissioner Rajneesh Goel for the High Court’s criticism of the corporators for favouring contractors.

He criticised the commissioner for failing to present the problems at landfills before the court. He took a dig at the BBMP administration in the past for not maintaining a buffer zone of two kilometre around landfills that eventually led to their closure. Moreover, the High Court’s observation on Tuesday where it directed that garbage be dumped in front of houses of corporators did not go well with them.

Disagreement between Mayor Venkatesh Murthy and senior corporators of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party came to the fore on Wednesday, with the dissident group demanding transparency in the BBMP.

The corporators led by floor leader of the house Nagaraju and Deputy Mayor L Srinivas at a meeting alleged that they were kept in the dark while deciding on various issues. Even chairpersons of various standing committees were not informed of major decisions taken on behalf of their departments, they added.

The corporators too expressed their unhappiness over not being told about floating tenders related to projects in their wards.
