DC directs Tahsildars to conduct a survey on labourers

Deputy Commissioner Dr N V Prasad has directed tahsildars to provide housing facilities and sites under Ashraya scheme for SC/STs working in coffee estates in the district.

Speaking at meeting of district-level vigilance and monitoring committee on steps to prevent atrocities on SC/STs, at Fort hall in Madikeri, on Saturday, he said there is a need to conduct survey on the number of SC/ST families residing inside the coffee estates in the district. A committee was constituted comprising Tahsildar, social welfare officer and labour inspectors to conduct the survey and provide housing facilities.

He said along with housing facilities, education, health and other basic facilities should be provided to the SC/ST labourers. Superintendent of Police Manjunath Annigeri said the labourers can contact the nearest police station if they meet with any atrocity in the coffee estates.

District Social Welfare Officer J Ganti said financial assistance of Rs 3.57 lakh has been distributed among those SC/STs who have undergone atrocity from January to September. CMC Commissioner N M Shashikumar said that there are 23 regular civic workers in the CMC. The civic workers are residing in the government quarters.

Paisari land has been encroached by the rich in the district. There is a need to reclaim the encroached land and distribute it among the poor, said Committee member Palani Prakash, Veerabhadra and Muthappa.

Member Muthappa said that measures should be taken to install the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in Madikeri.

Zilla Panchayat assistant executive engineer Mahadevaswamy, Virajpet tahsildar Nagaraju and others were present.
