Inter Milan, Leverkusen progress

Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen cruised into the Europa League knockout stage with emphatic wins on Thursday but holders Atletico Madrid and former winners Liverpool suffered surprise defeats.

Russia's Rubin Kazan, Olympique Lyon, Hanover 96 and Metalist Kharkiv joined Bayer and treble UEFA Cup winners Inter in sealing their progress to the last 32 with two games to spare.

Atletico Madrid's 16-match unbeaten run came to an end at Portugal's Academica, 2-0 winners thanks to a brace from Wilson Eduardo, while Ivorian striker Lacina Traore fired Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala to a 1-0 win over Liverpool.

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani scored four goals as the 1989 winners beat Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 4-2 and stay in the hunt.

Results: Group A: Udinese lt to Old Boys 2-3; Anzhi Makhachkala bt Liverpool 1-0. Group B: Academica bt Atletico Madrid 2-0; Viktoria Plzen bt Hapoel Tel Aviv 4-0. Group C: Fenerbahce bt AEL Limassol 2-0; Olympique Marseille drew with Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-2. Group D: Club Bruges drew with Newcastle United 2-2; Girondins Bordeaux bt Maritimo  1-0. Group E: FC Copenhagen lt to VfB Stuttgart 0-2; Molde lt to Steaua Bucharest 1-2. Group F: AIK Stockholm bt PSV Eindhoven 1-0; Napoli bt Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 4-2. Group G: Basel bt Fehervar 1-0; Sporting drew with Racing Genk 1-1. Group H: Partizan Belgrade lt to Inter Milan 1-3; Neftchi Baku lt to Rubin Kazan 0-1. Group I: Athletic Bilbao lt to Olympique Lyon 2-3; Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona drew with Sparta Prague 1- 1. Group J: Lazio bt Panathinaikos 3-0; Tottenham Hotspur bt Maribor 3-1. Group K: Bayer Leverkusen bt Rapid Vienna 3-0; Metalist Kharkiv bt Rosenborg Trondheim 3-1.

Group L: Twente Enschede drew with Levante 0-0; Hanover 96 bt Helsingborg 3-2.
