The garbage situation in the City is getting messier by the day. But there seems to be no forward action on the Palike’s order asking bulk generators of waste like hotels, marriage halls and convention halls to set up their own disposal systems for wet waste.

The BBMP is trying to convince them of the ‘profitability’ of setting up their own disposal plants.

Biogas plants, composting units and in-house garbage processing plants are some of the ways suggested, but managers of many hotels in the City are not even aware of the civic body’s order.

“The BBMP still picks up garbage from us on a daily basis. We are not aware of the order and are yet to look into a feasible plan to dispose of trash,” said the manager of The Grand Taj Hotel.

The management of the AKS Convention Centre, too, said they were still dependent on the Palike to clear garbage generated on their premises.

“No intimation has come to us over disposing of waste. Food leftovers are still being taken away by the BBMP pourakarmikas,” said Yusuf, the manager of the convention centre.

Some major builders and developers have, however, taken the initiative in their apartments. Brigade Group managing director T Jaishankar said almost all their projects had composting units.

“At our major projects like Brigade Gateway and Millenium, we are already composting waste. For the moment, we do not depend on the BBMP and have outsourced garbage disposal to private agencies,” he said.

Mantri Developers has installed converters to treat waste and has in-house plants for recycling water utilised in their complex. “The recycled water is used for gardening within the complex. We have outsourced waste disposal to private agencies.

For our upcoming projects, we are considering in-house biogas plants. The associations of the existing complexes will have to take the final call on setting up in-house biogas plants,” said Kiran of Mantri Group.

BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel told Deccan Herald that the Palike was actively pursuing bulk generators to ensure they comply with its order.

“We have sought action plans from identified bulk generators in each of the eight Palike zones. Once the action plans are received by us, we will decide our next step,” he said.
