Traffic police go after drunk drivers, book 1,300 in just one week

While the city celebrated Diwali with great fervour, at least 1,300 motorists were booked by the Delhi traffic police over the last one week for drunk driving.

“A total of 1,321 people were prosecuted within a period of eight days. The maximum number of persons were booked in west Delhi, 345, followed by south Delhi, 337,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

“At least 305 people were booked in east Delhi, 220 in north Delhi and 114 in central Delhi.”
Delhi traffic police conducted a special drive against drunk driving from November 5 to 12, ahead of Diwali.

Maximum prosecutions

With 221 prosecutions, the first day witnessed the maximum prosecutions over the 8-day drive.

According to traffic cops, of the total prosecutions about 376 people were booked outside pubs and restaurants, while the rest 945 were prosecuted at other locations.

The maximum defaulters were driving two-wheelers. 

“A total of 827 two-wheeler drivers were booked for drunkdriving and 47 were car owners,” a traffic official said.

While a fine of Rs 2,000 was slapped against the violators, the traffic police also impounded 443 vehicles during the drive.
