ASC champions in first leg

Army Service Corps (ASC) won the first phase of the inaugural Karnataka Volley League (KVL) at the Kodandaramapuram grounds, Malleswaram, on Monday.

ASC topped the league table with 13 points, with four wins from five matches in the six-team competition. Madras Engineer Group (MEG) finished second with 11 points, while BSNL came third with eight points. ASC were richer by Rs 25,000, while MEG and BSNL received Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.

The final league match between ASC and BSNL on Monday was decided by toss of coin as rain played spoilsport. BSNL won the toss and the match was treated as they won by 3-2 against ASC.

MEG scored a hard-fought 17-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) in the first match on Monday.

Setter Jaleel, attacker Sumesh and libero Gavas shone for MEG as they made a strong comeback after losing the first set to come up trumps in 100 minutes. Setter Vinayak, attacker Bharath and attacker Pruthvi Raj played well for DYSS.

LIC rallied to down KSP 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 in the second match. Setter Yashwanth Kumar, attacker M N Vikaram and blocker T C Sreeshekar excelled for the winners. Attacker Nagesh and libero Sajeesh Kumar’s good performances were not good enough as KSP went down four sets.

The second phase of the four-phase KVL will be played at the Sree Kanteerava stadium from December 11 to 15.

Results: MEG bt DYSS 17-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23; LIC bt KSP 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15, BSNL bt ASC (by spin of coin).

Final standings: ASC (13) 1; MEG (11) 2; BSNL (8) 3; LIC (8) 4; KSP (3) 5; DYSS (2) 6.
