Gangotri campus to get indoor stadium

Girish Doddamani, Mysore, Dec 5, 2012, DHNS : 23:12 IST
If all goes according to the plans, the serene Manasagangotri campus in the city will house an indoor stadium.

The stadium is planned at an estimated cost of Rs 1.25 crore under ‘Centre of Excellence’ plan.

Disclosing this to Deccan Herald, director of physical education, university of Mysore C Krishna said that the process is on to identity a suitable location to build the facility at Gangotri as Mansagangotri the PG campus of University of Mysore is popularly known as in the State. The work may be taken up next year.

The new facility will come up on a site in the dimension of 150ftx100ft, comprising three to four shuttle badminton courts, besides volleyball and basketball and also for practicing wrestling bouts.

What’s further is indoor stadiums planned at Maharaja’s and Yuvaraja’s College with funding from University Grants Commission (UGC).

The track at Oval grounds will get a new look in cinder. Keeping in pace with the technology, the track will be relaid with measures to construct drainages and divert rain water to the same in just one hour to ensure readiness of the track.

More than that, it will be a dedicated facility for athletes, while separate arrangements will be made for the benefit of joggers and strollers.

The intention is to give both (athletes and joggers) exclusive space without disturbing each other. Check walls will be constructed to prevent stray animals from entering the ground.

Replying to a query, Krishna clarified that synthetic track is ruled out as it will benefit only athletes, making it difficult to conduct sports meet for schools and colleges.

The cinder track will be laid at an estimated cost of Rs one crore in the coming academic year. The estimate is being readied and a proposal will be forwarded soon, Krishna added.

The track at Oval dates back to the year 1982 when an eight lane cinder track was laid. It was in the same year, All India Inter-University Athletics Meet was successfully conducted. Earlier to this, the oval grounds was the cricket ground of Yuvaraja’s College in 1980.

The track has the credit of honing the skills of successful athletes like the recent paralympics silver medal winner H N Gireesha, Olympian Shobha Javoor, international athlete S Somashekar, Shivegowda (father of discus champion Vikas Gowda), Reeth Abraham, master athletes N R Shankar Rao, H R Ramaswamy, Poovaiah, Vijayalakshmi Singh, M P Chandrashekar, Parvathi, Vijaya Ramesh, M Yogendra among several others.
