Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar on Tuesday assured the Legislative Assembly that the government will explore the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court on setting right the anomalies in the revised ward reservation list for elections to urban local bodies (ULBs).

It has prepared the reservation list based on 2001 census as the figures of 2011 census are yet to be finalised. The Directorate of Census has stated that the figures will be finalised only in June 2013. But, the elections to the ULBs should be held before March 2013, the minister said.

The government had planned to base the ward reservation list on 2011 census. Three city municipal councils (CMCs) of Shimoga, Tumkur and Bijapur will be eligible for elevation to city corporations and 42 town municipal councils will become CMCs if the latest census figures are applied.

But, the State Election Commission had approached the Karnataka High Court, which directed the government to complete the entire process by December 18.
