The government on Thursday approved the extradition treaty with Bangladesh proposed to be signed during Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s visit to Dhaka beginning Monday.
The long-awaited treaty was cleared by a Cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, after Bangladesh made minor modifications in the draft.
The treaty is expected to pave the way for deportation of jailed Ulfa ‘general secretary’ Anup Chetia and many other insurgents from the northeast hiding in Bangladesh. It will also help Dhaka get back its criminals currently lodged in Indian jails.
