MCC to distribute bins to houses

Last Updated 02 February 2013, 17:45 IST

Mangalore City Corporation will distribute plastic bins to houses and apartments at Mannagudda and Court wards shortly, to segregate the organic and dry waste from solid waste.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, MCC Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar said that the bins will be distributed free of cost. It will be distributed on an experimental basis, to facilitate the people to segregate the waste at the source. The bins had been stocked and were ready for distribution.

He said that the MCC had organised a meeting with the NGO representatives to create awareness among the public, on the need for segregating the waste.

The bins will be of green and yellow colours. The green bin will be for organic waste and the yellow will be for dry waste.

Each apartment or commercial establishment will be given two bins of separate colours.
He said the organic waste collected will be used for producing methane gas at the Nisargaruna bio-waste plant at Urwa Market. The dry waste will be shifted to the sanitary landfill site at Pacchanady.

“Looking at the response from the two wards, it will be extended slowly to other five wards. Taking a cue from the BBMP, the MCC will create awareness on segregating the waste from source, at the school level from next academic year,” he added.

Stating that solid management cess will be collected along with property tax from April, the Commissioner said several residents do not cooperate with the MCC in door-to-door collection. The residents in Surathkal and extended areas and other areas in the MCC limits are not ready to pay for door-to-door waste collection. Hence, the cess will be collected along with the property tax. To achieve cent per cent in door-to-door collection of waste, all the bins will have to be removed in the MCC limits.

Begging

The Commissioner said that the authorities have been carrying out a drive every fortnight, to shift the beggars in the City Corporation limits to Rehabilitation Centre, at Pacchanady. The centre can accommodate 150 persons. There are 100 inmates at the centre now.
