The Karnataka Government, on Saturday, moved the Supreme Court, in an effort to gain an additional two weeks’ time to prepare a fresh list of reserved seats for elections to urban local bodies.
In a review petition, the Karnataka Government said that it has been difficult preparing ward-wise reservation lists in the stipulated timeframe, because its resources are concentrated on the budget session of the State Assembly, due to start on Tuesday.
The Apex Court had on Friday, directed the State to submit the revised ward-wise reservation list by February 3. If the government fails to submit the list before the deadline, the State Election Commission is allowed to hold the poll using the existing list, based on the 2001 census. “In spite of this warning, the State filed the petition,” sources said.
