Lotus seeds, also known as makhane in India have tremendous nutritional value and can be eaten raw, roasted or fried. Used in many dishes across India, the makhana is actually considered a very pious food and included in many religious rituals also.

These seeds are low in saturated fats, sodium and cholesterol and are high in magnesium, potassium and phosphorus and are also great anti-oxidants. Makhana are high in fibre which helps avoid constipation. They help the body to remove waste and thus prevent accumulation of toxins.

According to Sonia Bajaj, a nutritionist, “Lotus seeds regulate blood pressure as they are low in sodium and high in potassium. It is a very beneficial food for those suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure. Makhanas are easy to digest and suitable for all age groups. One can also give them to children after dry roasting them and adding black salt and pepper. This is a healthier snack as compared to chips and French fries.”
Low in calories and high in fibre, makhanas are excellent for diabetic patients too, as they help lower blood sugar levels. “Makhane are recommended for pregnant women also as they maintain healthy pregnancy, tonify (meaning that it increases the available energy of the organ or the part of the body) the kidneys and are a great source of energy,” adds Sonia.

The seeds also help combat diarrhoea and improve one’s appetite. “These seeds are also useful in treating arthritis as they are high in fibre and low in calories. They are also great for weight loss too. One can munch on them whenever one feels like it, as this will not add free calories,” says Sonia.

Makhanas are also a great source of calcium and brilliant for heart patients as they aid in cardiac protection.
