Your coffee cup can tell what the stars hold for you! The concept of coffee cup reading is here. This is a part of intuitive science, which has its origin is China where monks predicted the future by reading patterns left by tea leaves.

This process is known as tasseography. Later, this art was taken up by Arabs but by using coffee as a medium. It is now being practiced in India also.

This practice involves prediction of one’s future and state of mind on the basis of patterns and images that form inside the cup after drinking the beverage. After the coffee is drunk, the cup is covered with a saucer, shaken and turned upside down into the saucer and left to dry. The patterns formed inside the cup after this process are interpreted. The reading answers both specific and general queries besides disclosing what lies in the sub-conscious mind of the drinker.

Neera Sareen, who learnt this art in Singapore, and has been practicing it for the last seven years, says, “The prediction is made on the basis of analysis of the pattern residual coffee forms inside the cup.”

The coffee is prepared by the healer in a specific style and given to the seeker. Usually, Turkish coffee beans are used to make coffee for the reading as they are well roasted and grounded coarsely. On the other hand, Indian coffee trickles down easily and leaves little scope of forming an image or pattern.

The images formed could be like snake sitting with a hood to a scorpion, alphabets, numbers, shivling, peacock, angel, feather, wings and many more. They all imply different meanings and predictions. These images, however, mostly appear like clutter to you and me.

“Generally, when a shivling forms, it means the person should worship Lord Shiva or should go on a Shiva pilgrimage. It also implies in some cases that the person should wear rudraksha. Peacock, angel, feather and wings signify positive aspects,” says Neera.

“Sometimes no image is formed inside the cup, which indicates that the person is not prepared to know the reading. That reading is called ‘junk mail’,” she adds.

Nawal Gani, who has been practicing coffee cup reading for the last 14 years, informs Metrolife that this form of fortune telling has been prevalent in Gulf countries, Syria, Iran, Egypt and Turkey for several decades. Other countries have also adopted it now. She too uses finely grounded Turkish coffee for the reading but has a different point of view.

“I believe this art cannot be learned, it is only inherited. A knowledge of Arabic language is must because most words and symbols that form are Arabic. Symbols differ from person to person. And I don’t predict future, I only guide and advise on the basis of readings of past and present,” shares Nawal, who inherited this art from her Syrian mother.

The pattern of fish suggests means money, snake means enemy, tree implies fame and roads means its time to travel. Dark and brooding birds bring bad news, while light birds with wings spread hold good news. “You have to drink the coffee while in a relaxed mood so that the reading is meaningful or accurate. The settled down coffee residue show the emotional and mental condition of the drinker,” says Nawal.
