10 including Paul Moras, Fidelis Pinto get Konkani Academy awards

The Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy has announced the names of the achievers, who will be honoured with the prestigious ‘Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Awards 2012.’

Briefing media persons here on Saturday, Academy Chairman Kasargod Chinna said that the Konkani Academy honoraray award winners are Paul Moras (Konkani language and literature), Krishna Bhavanishankar Bhat Honnavar (art) and Argodu K Govindaraya Shenoy (Konkani folklore). The Konkani book awards are won by Fr Pius Fidelis Pinto for his research work ‘Karaval Karnatakanthlya Konkani Catholikancho Ithihas, Tara Lavina Fernandes for her short stories ‘Daskath ani Her katha’ and Aruna Rao for her poems ‘Sakshatkara.’

He said the Academy will honour talented youth with ‘Konkani Yuva puraskar’ this year. The selected youth are Ankush N Nayak (music), Viyani Antonio D’Cunha (chess), Ramakrishna Nayak V (Artist) and Srinarayana Bhagavan Raykar (blind artist).

The award will be presented at Dr Rajendraprasad hall at Kumta on May 25.

 Kumta MLA Sharada Mohan Shetty will inaugurate the programme. Kannada and Culture department Commissioner K R Ramakrishna, MP Ananth Kumar Hegde will be the chief guests.

The honorary award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000, shawl, memento and a citation. The Book award carries Rs 5,000 cash, shawl, memento and citation.

Honorary awards

Paul Moras is a social worker and has worked in the field of Konkani language. For his work ‘Konkani chalval,’ he had won Dr T M A Pai Foundation’s Best Konkani Book award. Some of his works are ‘Jagaran,’ ‘Mogremkaran.’ He had won ‘Mahan Konkani Karbari’ and district-level Rajyotsav award. Krishna Bhavanishankar Bhat writes in the pen name of ‘Krishna Sharma.’ He has written Bhavageethe, Bhakthigeethe, play for Akashavani, Dharwad. Some of his works are ‘Akkulel Gayi Aappa Bhattaka Dana,’ ‘Matsyagandha,’ ‘Shakunthala,’ ‘Megha Sandesha,’ Rithugana,’ ‘Modern Mangalarathi.’ He hails from Honnavara.

Govindaraya Shenoy did not have formal education in schools, instead he was taught by his seniors at Aigala Mutt. Hailing from Argodu in Kundapura, he had given a touch to Yakshagana in Konkani language. He had written Yakshagana Prasanga in Konkani and had staged it at various places. Some of the Prasangas written by him are ‘Jambavathi Kalyana,’ ‘Sharasethu bandhana,’ and ‘Ramanjaneya.’

Book awards

Fr Pius Fidalis Pinto has written over 10 works on the history of Christians in Karnataka in English, Kannada and Konkani. Presently, he is a reseracher at Centre for South Asian Studies, at Cambridge University.

Tara Lavina Fernandes is a teacher at Government High School, Kinnikambala. Her short stories in Konkani have been published in various magazines. The winning work is her first published book.

Aruna Rao is a senior poet who resides in Mumbai. She is also a classical musician. Some of her short stories are ‘Akash Mantov,’ ‘Angan Kavitha’ and ‘Sakshathkara.’

Yuva awards

Ankush N Nayak has been learning sitar, Carnatic tala and music since he was nine years old. He had given musical programmes in Akashvani and Doordarshan and has won several prizes in Kalaprathibhotsava, Kala aaranji awards.

Viani Antonio D’Cunha is an international Fide rated chess player from Mangalore. He had taken part in chess tournaments at Turkey, Brazil, Philipines, China, Iran, Srilanka, Spain and other countries. He had also won Ekalavya award.

Ramakrishna Nayak V is a diploma holder from Mahalasa Art School and has exhibited art work at Hyderabad, Nagpura, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochin and at other places. He had won G R Eranna scholarship.

Srinarayana Bhagavan Raykar from Ankola had lost his eye sight when he was five years old.
With Braile script, he had passed SSLC with 84 per cent and has also passed music junior and senior exam with distinctions. He has secured 90 per cent marks in the first semester of MA in Philosophy and Sanskrit, at Rajiv Gandhi Sanskrit University.
