The Congress on Saturday sharpened its attack on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, comparing him with Hitler for his attempt to shut out institutions like the Lokayukta to conceal his “black deals”.

Congress spokesman Raj Babbar also welcomed the Supreme Court’s rejection of a curative petition filed by the Gujarat government seeking primacy for the chief minister in the appointment of a Lokayukta.

Modi and the Congress have been clashing over the Gujarat Lokayukta appointment since August 2011, when Governor Kamla Beniwal appointed Justice (retd) R A Mehta to the post that had been vacant for almost a decade.

"Since 2003, every effort has been made by the state government to stall the appointment of the Lokayukta," Babbar said.

He also said that the Gujarat High Court had rejected the state government’s petition to cancel the order to appoint Justice Mehta in Oct 2012, and pointed out that the apex court rejected the petition and the review petition on the issue before dismissing the curative petition.
