Infiltration is one way of ensuring win

Last Updated 03 August 2013, 17:32 IST

Infiltrating into the enemy territory is one of the ways of ensuring victory in a chess game. The infiltrated piece then, can win material or assist in setting up a checkmating net for the King. However all  infiltrations if not calculated carefully, do not result in victory.

In the game which ensues, the Black knight invades the enemy territory and goes all the way into the eighth rank. However this lone sojourn proves futile as the knight has actually gone astray in a balanced position and results in an immediate loss for Black.

White: Alexandre Lesiege (2582) – Black: Vera Reynaldo (2546)
Capablanca Memorial, Varadero , 2000. Modern Benoni

The Modern Benoni. Generally these days the Slavs , Grunfelds, Kings Indian Defence and Queen’s Gambit declined have gained more popularity
 6.Nf3 0–0 7.h3 a6 8.a4 e6 9.Bd3 exd5 10.cxd5 Re8
White has gained a tiny edge in the Opening. 11.0–0 c4
If 11...Nbd7 12.Bf4 c4 13.Bc2 Nc5
12.Bxc4. White decides to give up his centre pawn. More precise is 12.Bc2 Nbd7 13.Be3 Qc7 14.Qe2 Rb8 15.Ba7 Ra8. 12...Nxe4 13.Nxe4 Rxe4
A spate of exchanges at the centre
14.Bg5. If 14.Qc2 Re8 15.Bf4 Bf5 16.Qb3 Nd7 17.Bxd6 Nb6
14...Bf6 15.Qc2
White played a novelty here. If 15.Bd3 Re8 16.Bxf6 Qxf6 17.Re1 Rf8 (17...Rxe1+ 18.Qxe1 Bxh3) 18.Qe2 Bf5 19.Bxf5 Qxf5
15...Re8 16.Rfe1 Rxe1+ 17.Rxe1 Nd7 18.Bf4 Nc5
Black with a slight disadvantage decides on active defense rather than resort to passivity with  18...Nb6 19.Ba2 Bf5 20.Qb3 a5 21.Qa3
19.b4 Bf5 20.Qd1 Ne4
If 20...Nxa4 21.Qxa4 b5 22.Bxb5 axb5 23.Qxb5 Bc3. 21.g4 Nc3
It is an interesting battle now with each having bishop pair. If 21...Rc8 22.gxf5 Rxc4 23.Qd3 And if 21...b5 22.Bf1
22.Qd2 Bd7
Here Black can get his queen into action with 22. ..Qc8 or 22. ...Qc7. However if  22...Be4 23.Ng5is better for White
23.Bg5 Bxg5
If 23...Nxa4 24.Qf4 Bxg5 25.Nxg5 Qf8 (25...f5 26.Qxd6 Nb6 27.Nxh7) 26.Ne4

Going astray! Though the knight enters the first rank of the enemy he is virtually useless there. He should have played  25...Nxa4 26.Rf3 (26.Ne4 Qe5 27.g5 Kg7) 26...Qa1+ 27.Kg2 f5 28.Ne6 fxg4 29.hxg4 Nb6 30.Bb3 which would have led to an unclear position
26.Qc1
If 26.Ne4 Nxd2 27.Nxf6+ Kg7 28.Nxd7 Nxc4
26...Rc8
The position is difficult for Black and there is no good continuation. If  26...Qxg5 27.Re8+ And if 26...Bxa4 27.Ne4 Qd4 28.Ba2 are also better for White
27.Ne4 Qe5  28.Qxb1 Rxc4 29.Nc5 Qd4
