Newly appointed director of Rangayana, Janni (Janardhan) said that two theatre festivals have been planned in Dharwad and Shimoga by Rangayana artistes.

The theatre festivals will not only aim to attract new audiences, but will also train young artistes in those cities during the festival, he said.

“We will try to reach places in Karnataka where it is hard to reach. Youth will also be encouraged and enthused to participate in theatre,” he said.

As a measure, steps to implement founder of Rangayana, B V Karanth’s dream of a ‘Sanchaari Rangabhoomi’ (Mobile Theatre) will also be taken.

Political interference

Stressing that Rangayana was an autonomous body, he said that Rangayana must be ensured of operating independently, without any political interference.

Responding to questions regarding withdrawal of signing authority from the Director, he said that the earlier Ranga Samaja must take responsibility for the withdrawal.

He however welcomed the withdrawal, as now the responsibility of ‘accountability’ of funds was vested with the Deputy Director of Rangayana.

“However, no details of spending will be kept hidden from the director,” Janni said.
He said that he would take steps to audit Rangayana spendings, before seeking approval for additional funds from the state government.

Rangayana had ceased to operate effectively in the past few months due to various controversies regarding the administration of the body, he noted.

Navarathri Rangothsava

During the nine days of Navarathri, starting from October 5, nine plays will be staged as part of ‘Navarathri Rangothsava’ at Rangayana at 6.30 pm. Apart from these, Doll Show will also be held from October 5 to October 13, by Gayathri Shankar at Sriranga Rangamandira. An exhibition of lamps and other dolls will also be held.

Individuals who have contributed towards theatre from several parts of the state will be felicitated during the nine days of the festival, he said.

Plays staged are, Pugalendi Prahasana on October 5, Chirembadi Vaade on Oct 6, Krishnegowdana Aane on Oct 7, Chandrahasa on Oct 8, Checkmate on Oct 9, Sadarame on Oct 10, Beechi Bullets on Oct 11, En Hucchu Ri, Yaak-hingaadthiri on Oct 12 and Shoodra Tapaswi on Oct 13.
