Last Updated 11 April 2014, 20:10 IST

A 32-year-old man was killed and two of his friends injured when their car rammed into a stationary vehicle at south west Delhi’s Cantonment area in the wee hours of Friday.

The car also caught fire, but the survivors did not suffer any burns, police said
.
The deceased has been identified as Sandeep Kamal, a resident of Palam Vihar in Gurgaon. According to police, Sandeep was returning home with friends Manish and Varun in a Hyundai Santro car. They were near Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover when they met with the mishap at around 4.15 am.

“A Mahindra pick-up van was parked at Sanjay Gandhi T-Point when the Santro car rammed into it. Within minutes, the fire engulfed the entire car and it was reduced to a mangled heap of metal,” said a police officer.

The three men managed to get out of the car, but suffered critical injuries. Police and fire departments were informed by locals after which the victims were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Cantre.

“Sandeep was declared brought dead, while his friends are undergoing treatment,” the officer added. It is suspected that the car driver was speeding and failed to see the parked pick-up van.

Police and fire officers suspect that the car caught fire due to improper installation of the CNG kit. Probe has revealed that pick-up van’s driver had parked the vehicle due to a punctured tyre. The driver had gone to a nearby petrol pump when the incident took place. He was detained after the accident, but was allowed to leave after questioning.

A case of causing death due to negligence and causing hurt has been filed with Delhi Cantonment police station. The medical test of the car’s occupants confirmed that they were not in an inebriated condition. Sandeep’s body was handed over to his family after post-mortem.
