Rohatgi is new A-G

Last Updated 28 May 2014, 21:23 IST

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi is all set to be the new attorney-general. The lawyer, who handled corporate to criminal cases with equal poise, will be the 14th attorney-general, replacing G E Vahanvati.

He has earlier served as additional solicitor-general during the previous NDA regime.

Rohatgi confirmed to Deccan Herald on Wednesday morning his nomination to the post. He said he had given his  consent and was awaiting official confirmation.

Issuance of notification with regard to the appointment will take a few days as it has to obtain clearance from both the prime minister and President, sources said.

Listing out his priorities, Rohatgi was quoted by PTI as saying that he would try to streamline litigations in the Supreme Court.

“I will see that the superior courts are not flooded with frivolous and petty litigations,” he said, adding he would make all efforts to check that the government does not involve itself in inter-ministerial litigations.

“I will see and work out that the government department does not involve in litigations with each other,” he said.

Rohatgi had earlier appeared for several high-profile cases, including the Italian marines case, 2G case and Reliance Industries. He has also represented the Gujarat government several times.
