Man hacks father-in-law to death in public view

A man hacked his 71-year-old father-in-law to death and assaulted his wife in full public view near Sunkadakatte bus stop on Sunday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Murthappa, while his daughter Kalpana, 45, has been admitted to a hospital with head injuries.

Kailash Murthy, the assailant, who was thrashed by the public has also been hospitalised.

According to police, Murthy was married to Kalpana about 12 years ago and the couple live in a village near Nanjangud in Mysore district.

Kalpana did not like staying with her in-laws and pestered Murthy to live with her and their children in a separate house.

Murthy did not give in to her demand and Kalpana deserted him.

She was living with her parents for the past one year.

Expecting a few lakhs

Murthy, a farmer, had invested some money in a private company after selling his land. He was expecting a few lakhs as interest on his investment.

Kalpana, who knew that Murthy would receive the returns on his investments, had come to Bangalore along with her father to collect the money, a senior police officer said.

Kalpana and her father came to City three days ago and were staying in a lodge near Sunkadakatte.

Murthy, who got wind of the plan, came to the City around 6 am on Sunday. He knew that Kalpana and her father were staying at Shobha Lodge as it was their practice whenever they came to the City.

Murthy waited for the two near the lodge and upon seeing them, he questioned Kalpana as to why she wanted his money when she refused to stay with him.

Soon, a verbal duel ensued and an enraged Murthy followed Kalpana and her father till Sunkadakatte bus stand where he assaulted them with a machete.

Murthappa bled profusely due to the injuries and collapsed on the spot. Passersby shifted him to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Kalpana suffered severe injuries in the attack, police added.

Meanwhile, onlookers thrashed Murthy before he was rescued by the police. He has also been admitted to a hospital. A case has been registered.

Tanker mows down man

In a hit-and-run case, a pedestrian was killed on the spot after a water tanker mowed him down on Hosur Road on Sunday.

Police have identified the victim as Nagendra, 35, a resident of Garvebhavipalya.

The accident took place when Nagendra was crossing the road around 4.30 pm. The driver of the water tanker lost control of the vehicle and struck Nagendra.

He sped away after the accident, police said.
