Man from Manipur beaten to death in Delhi

Last Updated 21 July 2014, 20:12 IST

In a road rage incident, a 29-year-old man from Manipur was beaten to death by a group of five youths in south Delhi’s Kotla Mubarakpur during the early hours of Monday.

Akha Salouni succumbed to injuries but his two friends, one from Manipur and another from Bihar, escaped the attack and informed the police.

Police have arrested three persons, all residents of Delhi’s Garhi area, in this connection and said a hunt is on for the remaining two suspects.

A CCTV camera footage seized from a place near the spot of the crime provided the breakthrough, said a senior police officer.

The surviving Manipuri youth has not mentioned of racial abuses by the attackers in his statement in the FIR copy. B S Jaiswal, DCP (South district) said, “Although the arrested men have said that some words were exchanged between the two sides before the attack, it is too early to call it a hate crime. We are interrogating them further and examining the facts that have come up before us.”

On Sunday afternoon, Salouni, Dihe Kazheekrii (25) and Nagendra Sharma (40) met up at Munirka and had a few drinks before leaving for Masoodpur Colony to celebrate the fatherhood of one of their friends.
