BJP urges police chief to work with students

Last Updated 22 July 2014, 20:21 IST

A Delhi BJP delegation met police chief B S Bassi and sought better security for people from the northeast, in light of the fatal attack on a Manipuri man on Monday, and suggested involving students for providing security to women and elderly.

The BJP team, led by the party’s city unit chief Satish Upadhyay, also sought the starting of a special helpline number 1064  for lodging complaint against corruption – an initiative that was also taken up by the previous Aam Aadmi Party government headed by Arvind Kejriwal.

Hinting at harassment of hawkers and common citizens building houses in the city by corrupt government officials, Upadhyay said the helpline would play a major role in checking corruption.

Upadhyay said strict action should be taken against the culprits in cases involving violence against the citizens of northeastern states living in the national capital.

He also raised the issue of crimes against women and sought setting up of women police stations in each of the police districts.

The BJP delegation included MP and Delhi unit general secretary Ramesh Bidhuri, Jai Prakash and Shikha Rai.

Upadhyay drew the attention of the police commissioner on the need to improve the efficiency of the police station level staff as they are the people with whom the public come in contact directly.

Transfers policy

He also suggested a regular transfers policy for policemen to prevent misuse of any official capacity.

He said like Special Police Officers, teams of student volunteers should be formed which shall work as eyes and ears of police.

The students can play an important role in the security of the women, elderly and control of drug abuse by cooperating with the police at various levels, Upadhyay said.

The delegation informed Bassi about alleged interference in construction works by local police officials and harassment of property owners. Upadhyay said this should be stopped at the earliest.
