Five mowed down by goods vehicle

Five people were killed and as many as 20 sustained injuries after a goods vehicle ran into a religious procession near Kashettipalli village in Srinivaspur taluk on Tuesday night.

According to police, a special puja was organised praying for rains in the village on Tuesday night. The devotees were returning to their village along with the idol of the God in a procession, when the goods vehicle rammed into them.

Sriramappa (60) died on the spot while Manjunath (30), Kishore (19), Srinath (19) and Prabhakar Reddy (35) breathed last in the hospital. The idol of the God stuck to the vehicle in the accident and driver fled the spot along with the vehicle, eyewitnesses said.

Gownipalli police, who were informed about the accident, intercepted the vehicle near Lakshmipura Cross. However, the driver managed to escape abandoning the vehicle.
