With an aim to crack the whip on vehicles from other states plying in the City for apparent evasion of road tax, the Transport Department conducted a special drive and registered cases against 210 such vehicles under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.

During the drive, the department also seized about 120 vehicles, most of which were registered in the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Puducherry.

The seized vehicles have been kept in the custody of the transport department, and the officials say that these vehicles would be released only after the owners paid due taxes with the penalty amount.

Officials say that as per estimates, the drive would fetch about Rs three crore as tax, which the vehicle owners are liable to pay to the department.

Among the vehicles that were seized from various parts of the City by a team of officials including joint commissioners and additional commissioners, there were luxury vehicles such as Audi, BMW and Porche apart from many mid segment cars, SUVs and MUVs.

Tax evasion

Transport Commissioner K Amaranarayana said, “ The drives to sensitise the owners whose vehicles are registered in other states have been on for quite some time.
Now, these many cases have been registered and the vehicles have been seized so that the vehicle owners do not evade taxes.”

He added that they had observed that people registered their vehicles in States where the tax amount payable was less in order to save money.

Officials added that more such drives would be conducted by the department in the near future.
