When living space is at a premium, it would be desirable to utilise the available space in an intelligent manner. The usable space is defined when the householder invests in a flat, bungalow or villa. It is up to him or her to get the maximum use of the space with furniture and equipments that are needed to make life easier.

The space after utilisation should not appear too crowded or too sparse. An interior decorator could help in arranging the items one has in a better manner, though it’s the ultimate prerogative of the householder to get what he or she wants in a living area and its arrangement so that it is functionally optimised and  is aesthetically pleasing too.
Smart usage

Storage space is essential as it takes care of items and equipments that are not in regular use. Loft space can be converted into overhead space for storing items that are not needed very often.

Kitchen items, like vessels and food items have to be kept in containers in open shelves or kitchen cabinets to look aesthetically better, and are easily accessible, while saving on space too. Built-in cupboards  that are used to keep clothes and other items required often are always needed.

A folding dining table and ironing table are in demand when space is an issue. Sofa-cum-bed is an innovative space saving idea.

Where an indoor staircase is considered, then the space beneath could be used for shoe rack and for storing and displaying books and curios. A kitchen island with a polished stone could double up as a cutting board, a place to work, and also used as a dining table for one or two people.

Get creative

Imagination should be allowed to run wild when planning to utilise a small space better. A door in a toilet or bathroom could have rods and hooks for hanging clothes and towels. A small space could be conveniently fitted with shelves that are functional and also look good. This is also true of a corner space.

Shelves with rollers could be used under the bed to store extra bedspreads. Fitting drawers to cupboards can store all the extra knick-knacks. Kids love bunker beds. So, bring in one with higher sidewalls to prevent accidental falling. Drawers can be added to these beds. A tuck-away table with rollers could be drawn out for use as and when needed.

If a folding iron table is fixed on a wall, it could serve as an alternative space to keep items. Corners could be utilised to keep a working-table for children, as also  a storage place with shelves for books and toys and sports goods.

A sliding door in your wardrobe saves space and is functionally convenient too. Creating storage space in the wall itself with glass sliding doors is an age-old idea that works really well even today.  A sofa-cum-bed, ironing table as counter place, a kitchen work table as small dining table, built in cupboards and several other multipurpose-serving entities are all useful ideas to make the best use of the space available.

A small living space could be transformed into an attractive modern studio apartment with every possible gadget for comfortable living.  Even a tiny bathroom can be made into an attractive place with all the facilities needed. There is no end to ideas that could transform a small living space into one that serves the needs of the householder without being too crowded.

Searching the web, consulting interior designers, visiting innovative homes and smart thinking can generate enough ideas to make even a small space inviting.
