Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said that there were 1,94,080 vacancies in the 28 government departments.

Replying to JD(S) member E Krishnappa in the Legislative Council, he said that in the current year, 9,000 and 16,000 posts would be filled up in police and education departments, respectively.

The department-wise break up of the vacancies are—Education department 52,123 posts, home and transport department 28,074, health department 27,593, social welfare department 13,745, horticulture department 10,893, rural development 8,892 and law department 8,257.

‘No recruitments’

In all, 35 per cent of the sanctioned posts are vacant. It is possible to give effective administration even without filling up all vacant posts. Only essential posts will be filled up keeping the Administrative Reforms Commission recommendations in view, the chief minister said.

Siddaramaiah said that the vacancies had remained so because the previous governments didn’t recruit people periodically.

Police department

In a written reply to Mahantesh Shivananda Koujalgi (Cong), Home Minister K J George said 1,100 police sub inspector posts were vacant.

The process is on to recruit 374 inspectors in the current financial year, he added.

The police-people ratio in the State is 1:667, while at the national level it is 1:568. As many as 15,959 additional posts will have to be created to reach the national average.

They include 10,284 police constable posts and 680 inspector posts. The process is on to directly recruit 8,501 constables. The vacancies at inspector, police constable and assistant level are 19,272, he added.
