Jamnalal Bajaj award to Surendra Koulagi

Freedom fighter Surendra Koulagi has been selected for this year’s Jamnalal Bajaj award for social service.


The award will be presented to the 80-year-old Gandhian in November in Mumbai. It carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.

Koulagi is the founder of the Janapada Seva Trust at Melukote in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district.

The Trust got recognition from the Khadi and Village Industries Board in the 1970s. It is responsible for better the lives of rural women by providing them self-employment opportunities.

Koulagi was born at Gudageri village in Dharwad district and settled in Melukote five decades ago
