Five Delhi Police personnel, including the SHO of Karawal Nagar police station, were injured when a group clashed with them in east Delhi on Tuesday. The mob also damaged the SHO’s official vehicle and torched two privately-owned motorcycles.

The clash took place at around 9 am after a team of cops went to rescue two youths being beaten after two schoolgirls, who were missing from home, were found with them in a house, said the police.

Sources said as the two girls and one of the youths were from different communities, tension escalated. The girls, both aged 15 years, are Class 9 students at a local government school.

On Tuesday morning, the girls were dropped outside school by the uncle of one of them. However, instead of entering school, they met up with one of the youths, identified as Sunil. A close relative of one of the girls, Sunil took them on his motorcycle to his friend Amir's house in Shiv Vihar Colony. Amir was said to be the boyfriend of the other girl, while Sunil was having an affair with his relative.

Seeing the girls in school uniform enter Amir's house with Sunil, the locals gheraoed it and brought the youths and the girls outside. Accusing the youths of promoting prostitution, the locals started beating them up.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Sanjay Beniwal said the matter was brought to the notice of the Karawal Nagar police station SHO, who immediately reached the spot in plain clothes with his team. “When the police team tried to rescue the youths, the mob became agitated and resorted to stone-pelting,” said Beniwal.

The locals, however, alleged that not only did the police reach the spot late, but they also let Amir escape. Sunil, on the other hand, was admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

The injured police officers have been identified as Karawal Nagar police station SHO Jashod Singh Mehta, Sub-Inspector Manoj, Assistant Sub-Inspector Yogesh Tyagi, Head Constable Pramod and Constable Rajendra.
