Now, police stations under CCTV surveillance

Last Updated 18 September 2014, 19:11 IST

In a bid to keep tabs on police personnel and ensure complainants/public are not harassed, CCTV cameras will soon be installed across police stations in the City.

The Bangalore Political Action Committee (B.PAC) in association with the City Police has already installed CCTV cameras at three police stations on a pilot basis. As part of the project, three CCTV cameras each have been installed at Srirampura, Malleswaram and Seshadripuram police stations. Out of the three CCTV cameras, two have been installed inside the police station and one towards the entrance of the station.

“The footage can be monitored from the control room in the police commissioner’s office, but for now, it is monitored only when necessary. If anyone approaches us with problems in lodging a complaint or delay in registering FIRs, than we can go back and check the CCTV footage and take action. Hopefully, by the end of this year, every police station should be equipped with CCTV cameras,” Police Commissioner M N Reddi said.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, a member of B.PAC said, “The project began about a month ago and is being implemented on a trial basis. The main aim is to ensure safety of complainants or people, who come to the police station for any reason.”

A senior police officer seeking anonymity said, “This is a good initiative and will help keeping tabs on policemen. Incidents that occur in the police station often go unnoticed. The public are always under constant fear to go to the police station and they think twice before talking to policemen. Initiatives like these would help building confidence among people.”
