Three construction workers died and two were injured after the compound wall they were constructing, collapsed on them in Bommasandra Industrial area under Hebbagodi police limits on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Sameer, 26, Pachu, 35 and Shankar, 19, all natives of Kolkata and residents of Bommasandra. While Gopal and Gotu, also from Kolkata, suffered injuries and are said to be out of danger, said police.

All the five had come to the City a couple of years ago and were working as construction labourers. They were engaged for constructing a compound wall around the premises of Deccan Industries Fabricator.

Around 11 am on Saturday, the workers were fitting iron angles to support the 40-foot wall when it collapsed on them. All the five were buried under the debris. Passersby alerted the Fire and Emergency Services and the police, who rushed to the spot and launched the rescue operation.

They pulled out Gopal and Gotu and rushed them to hospital. After around 20 minutes, Shankar was rescued and shifted to hospital where he died. Sameer and Pachu died on the spot, police said.

A senior police officer, who visited the spot, said that the wall was damp due to rain in the last few days. He said that the workers had no safety gear and were prone to danger while they were working.

The other workers informed the police that the materials used for the construction of the compound wall was not of good quality and construction was completed at a rapid pace without proper curing. “It shows that it was a shoddy work which resulted in the incident,” he said.

The officer said that a case of negligence has been registered against the mason and the owner of the fabricator industry.
