Last Updated 21 September 2014, 18:49 IST

A woman suffered burns on her face and hands after her husband threw acid at her at their home near Gandhi Circle under Varthur police station limits on Saturday.

According to the police, Firoze Khan (33), a driver, attacked his wife Ulfat Banu following a heated argument. Hearing her screams, the neighbours intervened and rushed her to Victoria Hospital. They caught Khan and called the police.

The police said that Banu and Khan had been married for 12 years. He worked in Saudi Arabia as a driver and had recently returned to India. Banu used to pester him to go back to Saudi Arabia, saying he could earn more there, but Khan disagreed and started working as a driver in the City. The couple would fight the issue every day, and it led to the attack, police added.

Banu’s relative Abdul Khader has lodged a complaint. Khan has been booked under  Sections 326 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code.

Minister of State for Women and Child Development Umashree met the victim at the Victoria Hospital and announced a compensation of Rs one lakh.

Two succumb to burns

A woman and her youngest son, who had suffered 50 per cent burns in an LPG cylinder explosion on Thursday, died at the Victoria Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased, Uma Devi (42) and Bhaskar (13), were residents of Gopalapura under Magadi Road police station limits. According to police, the woman and her son did not respond to treatment and died on Sunday afternoon. Uma Devi’s husband Narasimha (46) and their children Venkatesh (18) and Hemavathi (16), who had also suffered injuries, have been kept under observation, the police added.

The police said the family had not turned off the stove’s knob properly the previous night (Wednesday), which led to gas leakage. The next morning, when Uma lit the stove, the cylinder exploded, injuring all the five members of the family, police added.
