Woman dies as lightning strikes in Naragund taluk

A 38-year-old woman died and two of her family members were injured as lightning struck them in a field near Kallapur in Naragund taluk of Gadag district.

According to police, residents of Kallapur, Shivappa Hujarathi, his wife and their two daughters were sowing maize seeds when it started pouring. They took shelter under a tree when lightning struck them and severely injured one of the daughters Chennavva (38). She died on the way to hospital. Shivappa and the other daughter Basavavva are being treated in the hospital, the police said. Shivappa’s wife Shantavva is out of danger, the police added. CPI S R Patil visited the victims at the hospital.

Heavy rain lashed Hospet town from 1.30 am to 4 am on Saturday, leading to waterlogging and loss of crops in many areas. Water entered the houses situated in low-lying areas. The road connecting M P Prakash Nagar and Azad Nagar, the roads to Hampi and Bellary, Nehru Colony, Patel Nagar and other areas were inundated.

There was water-logging in fields beside the Rayara water tank on the outskirts of the town due to the overflowing of the tank. Water entered houses in Kariganur and B J Camp Nagar villages in the taluk. Anand Reddy, a resident, lost his cotton and tur crop grown on 2.5 acres of land. Many others too have lost their crops.

The taluk recorded an overall rainfall of 28 mm. Hospet town has recorded 58 mm rainfall. T B Dam region recorded a rainfall of 47 mm and Mariyappanahalli has recorded a rainfall of 35 mm. There were light showers in the taluk in the afternoon.
