A 26-year-old Delhi Police constable was shot dead by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in north east Delhi’s Jafrabad on Saturday.

The service pistol of the constable posted with Jafrabad police station earlier this month was missing after the incident, police said.

Dharampal, from Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district, had joined Delhi Police in 2010. According to police, Dharampal was on duty when the incident took place around 11.15 am.

“Dharampal was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, but was declared brought dead. He was shot in the head and abdomen,” said R A Sanjeev, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East). After initial probe, the investigators suspect it to be a case of personal enmity. “At present, we are clueless about the reason behind the attack,” Sanjeev added.

Sources said that the attack took place when Dharampal went to Maujpur Chowk to verify the arms licence of a trader. The constable was about to return to his police station when the two motorcycle-borne assailants came from behind and stabbed him in the abdomen.

In the scuffle, Dharampal’s pistol fell down. When he tried to pick it up, the two men opened fire. Dharampal was wounded in his head and abdomen. The accused immediately fled from the spot, and locals could not identify them as they were wearing helmets.

A case under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered with Jafrabad police station. Dharampal used to stay in the barracks of Jafrabad police station. He had been working on several cases as he had a good criminal intelligence network.
Before the posting earlier this month, Dharampal was with Okhla police station in south east Delhi since 2010.
