In tune with the tag of Bangalore being the IT capital and using the opportunity to generate awareness on the ‘Clean India’ initiative, the BJP on Thursday launched a mobile application for people to identify and upload pictures of litter seen on the streets of the City.

The mobile application, litterspotmarker, is readily available on Google Play and www.sbsb.co.in for android operating system. The app allows people to click pictures of garbage dumps in their neighbourhood and upload them online using litterspotmarker.

“Once the pictures are uploaded, it will help us conduct a study on how much garbage is being dumped in various parts of the City. This study will then be submitted to the government and the BBMP. In the second phase, we are looking to tie-up with BBMP health inspectors for inspecting the litter spots which are uploaded on the application and cleaning them,” said Anil Chalageri, co-ordinator of ‘BJP for Better Bangalore’.

The app is the combined effort of BJP, the Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA) and the Forward Foundation. The back office management is sponsored by IT firms which are part of ELCIA.

For the time being, the litterspotmarker will be available for Bangalore West, which comprises 44 wards.

The BJP also made its presence felt on the streets on Thursday. From the lanes of Sultanpet to the pillars of Namma Metro, party leaders went on a symbolic cleaning drive. The BJP undertook cleaning drives in around 100 locations in Bangalore alone.

The party’s MPs, MLAs and corporators joined the symbolic cleaning initiative. Leading the charge was Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar, who cleaned the platforms of the City railway station early in the morning.

While the Congress has officially not supported the initiative, their MP Rajeev Gowda was present during the cleaning initiative at the railway station. Bangalore Central MP P C Mohan took part in the drive at the Cantonment railway station. He later cleaned the streets of Sultanpet and other places in his constituency.

Party MLC Ashwathnarayan removed film and advertisement posters on Namma Metro pillars in Vijayanagar and surrounding areas. BJP leader R Ashoka participated in the cleanliness drive at Padmanabhanagar, while V Somanna swept the roads in Vijayanagar.
