The Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) sprang a surprise by notching two stunning victories in the Maharashtra polls.

Backed by Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM candidates won the Aurangabad Central and Byculla seats in Mumbai by defeating Shiv Sena and BJP nominees, respectively. Former journalist Imtiyaz Jaleel trounced Sena’s former MP and also former mayor Pradeep Jaiswal by about 20,000 votes in Aurangabad Central and Warish Yusuf Pathan beat BJP’s Madhukar Chavan by 1,357 votes in Byculla.

The MIM had fielded 28 candidates. It had put up some strong candidates in the Marathwada region, including Nanded and Aurangabad.
