A journey with a purpose

BASS SOUNDS

Brothers of German-Korean descent, Christian Meyerholz (Chris) and Sebastian Meyerholz (Buddy) began playing music at a very early age.

Chris was interested in hip-hop and dancehall, while Buddy was a vocalist and bass guitarist – but it wasn’t until the late 2000s that they decided to start making music together and that’s how ‘Symbiz Sound’ came into being. “We were actually travelling in India when we first decided to form a group,” recalls Buddy. Slowly, the lead singer Zhi Trieu joined in. Although they initially found common ground in dancehall, it was dubstep that eventually caught their fancy. The band is currently in the City as part of the ‘Bass Camp Festival’ and is looking forward to performing here.

They promise that it’s going to be an “energetic show”. “This is the third time that we are in India but it’s the first time that we have come with the entire set-up. We are extremely happy to be back and have received a warm welcome every time we have come,” says Buddy. “It’s great to travel and make music at the same time. It’s travelling with a purpose. But most of the times that we have come here, we haven’t had much time to do anything.”

Having performed in places in like Europe, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and even Palestine to name a few, Buddy says that the crowd in each country has a unique taste. “While in Zimbabwe, people like to dance, in West Germany and Holland, they like hard bass lines,” he notes. Recalling their tour of Palestine, he says, “It was quite funny as the three of us look Asian. But they liked the Caribbean bass music we played.”

Buddy says he appreciates Bollywood music though “some say it’s cheesy”. “It has rhythmic patterns and is also easily accessible. I had even been for a classical concert and enjoyed it but you need to learn it in order to appreciate it better,” he explains. The band is looking forward to touring and releasing more videos. Catch ‘Symbiz Sound’ live on October 24 at The Humming Tree as part of the ‘Bass Camp Festival’.
