Garbage truck enters Mandur inadvertently

Last Updated 22 November 2014, 21:24 IST

Despite orders by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Special Commissioner for Solid Waste Management, Darpan Jain, to the Palike engineers from Mahadevapura zone to not let any garbage trucks enter the Mandur landfill area from November 21, one truck managed to enter the site on Friday.

The residents said that the truck driver was not aware of the instructions given by the BBMP higher authorities. Subsequently, the engineers from the zone who were visiting the spot, didn’t let the driver dump the garbage and sent him back.

Meanwhile, the residents of Mandur were happy as the one truck that had managed to enter was barred and no trucks were allowed in the landfill site. However, some of them were anxious about the coming days and were skeptical about the civic agency.

“We believe in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s words, but do not believe  in the BBMP. The Palike had assured us of not dumping garbage, four times earlier, but they failed every time,” said Sreedhar Gowda M A.

He added that in case the trucks continued to enter the landfill site in the coming days, they would allow them only till November 30 and not after that.

The villagers complained that the stench continues to irk them, and so does the mosquito menace. Gopal Rao, a resident said that about 35 lakh metric tonnes of waste had accumulated at the landfill site and steps had to be taken at the earliest to clear it.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, when contacted, told Deccan Herald, “The issue of clearing the accumulated waste will be discussed in the upcoming Cabinet session. A total of Rs 90 crore has been allotted by the State to clear the trash and four processing units will be set up for the same. We have set a deadline of three years to complete the work.”
Sreedhar Gowda said that they were planning to meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and request him to visit the village. “We will discuss with the CM the steps to be taken to clear the waste accumulated here and the other problems faced by us," he added.
