Mandya has got the credit of becoming the first district in the State to reach the target in the construction of toilets, under Swaccha Bharath Abhiyan.

While the set target was 31,425 toilets, the district was successful in achieving it by October 2014, and has even launched construction of an additional 40,000 toilets.

The district was successful in achieving 68 per cent target during the year 2013-14 by constructing 17,033 toilets. After officer Rohini Sindhuri took charge as the ZP CEO, she gave priority to the scheme, rectifying the baseline errors, which subsequently led to the district achieving the target.

Sindhuri said that it not an easy task to reach the target. She said, she had utilised the opportunity of visits to government schools and hostels during her official trips to stress on the construction of toilets at homes.

The teachers were given the responsibility of identifying students without a toilet at home, to educate the parents. Anganwadi and Asha workers too played a major role in the success of building the toilets, she said.

The ZP also sent out voice messages of District-in-charge Minister Ambarish through cellphones. Street plays highlighting the importance of hygiene and publicity through public address system was also taken up, said Sindhuri.

Weekly meetings with executive and nodal officers and video conferences with panchayat development officers were also conducted every fortnight.
