A 28-year-old housewife, allegedly harassed for dowry by husband and in-laws, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence in Agrahara Dasarahalli on Saturday.

According to the police, Jyothi was found hanging from the ceiling of her room. She was married to Satish for the past five years and the couple had a four-year-old son, Kushal.

On Saturday evening, Jyothi called her parents in anguish and told them that she was unable to bear the torture, that she would end her life. Even while her husband and the family were in the drawing room, she went to her room and hanged herself.

The incident came to light when Jyothi’s parents reached the house asking for her.
They were told that she was inside her room. Puttaswamy, her father, entered the room to find her hanging from the ceiling. Hearing the father’s screams, the rest of the family and neighbours rushed to the house.

The police were soon informed and on arrival they found that her husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law had fled except for Muniswamy, her father-in-law.

Harassment continued
According to the complaint registered by the parents, Jyothi was harassed by her
husband and in-laws for dowry. It also stated that she was abused both physically and mentally. Recently, both the families had settled the matter amicably, but the harassment had not ceased, said the police.

A senior police officer said: “We have detained Jyothi's father-in-law, Muniswamy for questioning. A manhunt has been launched to nab the rest of the family currently absconding.”

A complaint has been registered under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 304 B (dowry death) and 498A R/w 34 (husband or relative of husband subjecting her to cruelty) and investigation is on.
