Committees to conduct non-violent Kambalas

Last Updated 16 December 2014, 19:50 IST

The members of the District Kambala Samithi, at an emergency meeting here on Tuesday, decided to conduct a non-violent Kambala.

The popular sport of the coastal region, Kambala (traditional buffalo racing on slush tracks), will be organised within the legal framework, the members decided.

As per the high court orders, use of canes has been banned in the sport. Canes were being used to provoke the buffaloes to run faster in the race. Criminal cases would be filed against those who caned the buffaloes and the owners would be held responsible.

Following a ban on Kambala by the court, the sport was halted in the region. After the court granted a conditional nod, the meeting decided to revise the timetable for the sport and also seek the deputy commissioner and the police commissioner’s approval.

The first Kambala race has been scheduled for December 20 at Baradi.
