City celebrates Women's Day

Last Updated 08 March 2015, 19:03 IST

It was a Sunday and what better way to celebrate Women’s Day than putting on those running shoes and showing athletic skills.

More than 2,000 people participated in the Contours Women’s Day marathon, organised at Embassy Golf Links.

There were both 5,000-metre and 10,000-metre races in the event. While some went the fitness way to celebrate the day, there were several events that focused on breast cancer awareness, to mark the day. At Gopalan Mall, a flash mob was organised to spread awareness about cancer conditions in women.

At another part of the City, Sobha Limited organised an exclusive workshop for its women employees.

The workshop focused on the risks of breast cancer. Dr Jayanti S Thumsi, senior consultant and oncologist, BGS Global Hospitals, told women about the risks of breast cancer and how, with proper care, the disease could be avoided. Counselling was also given to employees about undergoing self-examination every month and an annual mammogram test that could help in early detection of cancer.

A unique event was organised in the city, with participants taking a pledge for women’s safety. Students of New Horizon College of Engineering formed a human chain where several hundreds of students joined hands and pledged to work towards providing a safe environment for women. Students enacted a skit about ensuring respect for women.

Maha Academy and DS Max had organised the Pink Whistle campaign near the Town Hall on Sunday. As many as 1,000 safety whistles were distributed to women on the occasion.
