Angry at girlfriend coming home late, man kills daughter

Enraged over his live-in partner returning home late, a man here strangled to death their five-year-old daughter at his residence here, police said.

Vipul Mehta (39) was arrested on charges of murdering Piya, his biological daughter from his live-in partner Nagma Shaikh (24), at their residence in Sai Kripa Society at Poonam Nagar area in suburban Andheri in the wee hours today.

According to police, Vipul and Nagma,who is a bartender by profession, had arguments on several occasions as she returned home late, leaving behind only him to take care of their daughter. He had even warned her to come home early.

"Last night, Nagma went to her friend's place and despite Vipul's repeated calls, she did not respond. At about 4.30 AM today, Vipul, who was under the influence of alcohol, throttled Piya in a fit of rage. And then he consumed germ- killing liquid," MIDC police station officer Rajaram Mandage said.

Hearing the child's screams, neighbours alerted police, who on reaching the spot found the girl and Vipul in an unconscious state.

Around the same time, Nagma returned home and learnt about the incident.

The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead before admission.
Vipul has been undergoing treatment at civic-run J J hospital in south Mumbai and he was placed under arrest in the crime, said Mandage.
