Man jumps to death in front of train

A 28-year-old man, believed to be suffering from depression since childhood, jumped to his death in front of a running train at south Delhi’s Chhatarpur Metro station on Wednesday.

It took the authorities over 30 minutes to remove the mangled remains of the body from the railway tracks.

Metro services between Huda City Centre and Chhatarpur were hit for over an hour, claimed eyewitnesses.

However, trains continued to run unaffected on the busy route between Vishwavidyalaya and Qutub Minar, said a Metro spokesperson.

Victim Ajay Kashyap was a resident of Sangam Vihar in south Delhi. He worked at a printing press in the area and lived alone as his wife had separated from him sometime ago, said police.

He has left behind a two-year-old daughter. A suicide note was recovered from the victim in which he wrote he was committing suicide due to depression.

“The suicide note contains that no one else must be blamed for his suicide,” a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.

Police spoke to his family and learnt that Kashyap was suffering since a young age.
“He was undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital and Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences,” the officer said.

However, the treatment had little effect on him as he continued to suffer from depression and maintained a very low social life. No particular reason has been cited for his depression.

He arrived at Chhatarpur Metro station around 2 pm and loitered around at the platform for a while before taking the plunge in front of a running Jahangirpuri-bound train headed from Huda City Centre.

“We were evacuated from the train in order to bring the body out and clean the tracks,” a passenger told this newspaper. The man had already died by the time he was brought out.
