Indie game developer wins `10 lakh Game Hack

Bengaluru: April 18, 2015: DHNS:

Indie game developer Himanshu Manwani’s brainchild won ‘Game Hack’ at Pocket Gamers Connects, an international mobile gaming conference that began on Thursday. He walked off with a cool Rs 10 lakh cash prize.

Inspired by popular video games such as Super Mario and Meatballs, the game developer based in Bhopal created a mobile game called the ‘Super Nano Games’. Developed in a span of two and a half months, Manwani’s game was adjudged the winner.

‘Game Hack’ is a first-of-its-kind pan-India game development and pitch competition. The first prize carried a purse of Rs 10 lakh and a chance to be incubated at Reliance Studios. Over 1,500 indie or independent game developers took part in the competition, however it ultimately boiled down to five finalists who pitched for their own games.

With 30 levels and 60 stages, Himanshu’s game is very difficult to complete, which also seems to be its unique selling point. “I wanted to make the game very difficult. Even Mario was quite difficult to complete and the jury members also advised me to not make it easy,” he said.

Right from the programming to the designing of the game, every little detail was created by Himanshu. “Only the soundtrack is borrowed from open source platforms,” he said.
As a child, Himanshu loved playing video games, but he never gave serious thought to taking up game developing as a profession till after college. “I studied engineering in Bhopal but was undecided about what to do after that. I then enrolled for a course in game development in Bengaluru and immediately knew what I would do henceforth,” he said.

After working at a game development firm for three years, Himanshu decided to quit his job and floated his own independent company, Xigma Games. “I wanted to develop games that I was interested in making,” he said. For now, Xigma Games is only a one man company but expansion plans are under way.

Asked about what he would do with the money, Himanshu is all smiles: “I will definitely get myself an i-Phone and more equipment to get my game development right,” he said.

People’s choice award

Ether Studios emerged the winner of the People’s Choice Awards for its ‘Salvation Ultimate’ at the second day of Reliance Games’ Pocket Gamer Connects, 2015. People voted for as many as 26 indie game developers. The winners received a cash prize of Rs one lakh.

World Wide Open, an Indian digital solutions company, and Personagraph, a US-based company which provides mobile analytics and user understanding, entered a partnership to bring data/audience-driven Private Marketplace (PMP) specifically for mobile developers in India.
The Private Marketplace will be open for mobile developers with clear instructions on ad viewability, sizing, brand transparency and more while marketers will be allowed to buy the inventory via guaranteed and non-guaranteed means.
