Two children riding pillion on a scooter with their mother were killed after a private bus rammed the two-wheeler in Halasuru Gate traffic police limits on Sunday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Shama Anjum, 13, and her younger sister Aimen, aged one-and-a-half years.

The victims’ mother Ameena, who was riding the scooter, also suffered injuries, said the police.

At around 4.45 pm on Sunday, Ameena had parked the scooter near a tree close to the Halasuru Gate police station as it was raining. Shama was holding an umbrella to protect herself and Aimen from rain. A private bus from NR Circle bound for Majestic approached the police station.

The bus driver lost control and struck Ameena’s scooter. Due to the impact, Ameena fell on to her left and Shama Anjum and Aimen fell to their right. Shama was killed on the spot as she came under the rear wheel of the bus and Aimen suffered severe injuries.

A few local residents rushed Aimen to a nearby hospital where she died of injuries, added the police.

Ameena, a homemaker, had set out to Majestic, along with her daughters, to meet her husband, who runs an optical store in Majestic. The couple are residents of Lalbagh Siddapura.

The police have taken the bus driver, Mohammad Yusuf, into custody.

Woman ends life

A 28-year-old woman committed suicide after a spat with her mother-in-law in Banaswadi on Sunday.

The deceased, Suma Mercy, 28, a native of Dharwad, was married to Kiran for four years. The couple have a two-year-old son. Suma and Kiran were both employed at the same call centre, said the police. The couple had planned an excursion and Suma wanted to invite Kiran’s sister’s children, too, for the outing. However, Kiran’s mother did not approve of Suma’s plans.

Apparently disappointed, she had a spat with her mother-in-law, locked herself inside a room and hanged herself, said the police.

Her husband grew suspicious as she did not come out of the room for a long time or respond to the repeated knocks on the door.

He opened the window of the room only to find Suma’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. Suma’s parents informed the police that her in-laws never harassed her.

They said she would often lose her temper over various issues. There was no death note found.
